I’ve loved listening to music for as long as I can remember. But I only started singing in February 2025. Yes I did take chorus in middle school, but I’m not sure how much I learned and it was a very long time ago!
I never thought I could sing. But in February, I recorded myself singing happy birthday to my mom because I wanted to send the recording to her. When I listened to the recording I was surprised to discover that it sounded like Happy Birthday! I hadn’t realized I could carry a tune well enough to have it be recognizable. So then later that day I decided to see if I could practice and then record myself singing another song as a gift to my mom. I recorded it and thought it sounded pretty good. So I sent it to my mom and she was incredibly impressed and so supportive. That made me feel brave enough to try singing more songs. I made a goal of trying to sing at least one song per day. And I did that most days.
Then in April I was looking out the window of my house and saw an adorable blackbird holding a bright red berry in its beak. Suddenly a song about blackbirds popped into my head. I had no idea who sang it and how I knew it. So I looked online to find songs about blackbirds and discovered “Blackbird” by The Beatles. I had no recollection of knowing that song or even having heard their version. But I went ahead and listened a few times and then started practicing it. After a couple days I felt inspired to personalize the song. So I changed a few words. And then at some point I started making up my own lyrics to it. And finally I wrote my first song to the tune of “Blackbird.”
When I decided in July that I would go ahead and have surgery to remove my brain grape (link), one of my goals was to share at least one song that I wrote with the world before my surgery. I discovered that you can’t upload music files directly to YouTube. They have to be video files. I’ve never created a video and had no idea how to convert my files, but my brother suggested a free program and I finally completed my first music video on 9/23/25!!!! I’m excited (and a bit scared) to share it with you here:
